Regarding my earlier posting about gdb problems... I've noticed that 
statically compiling my executable seems to enable me to step through my 
application and look at variables, whereas dynamic compilation does not 
work. I don't know why, but I just thought I'd post this in case someone 
had any insight or in case it may be of future use to someone else with 
a similar problem...
