The big change is converting to 1.7 or later, because that requires Autoconf
2.5x; adopting 1.8.x or (when it comes out) 1.9.x is not a big chore compared
to updating the configure scripts.

I used 1.8.x for libltdl and libffi in other projects. I can try updating all
of these (and libmudflap) next Monday.

This is by far the most complex use of automake in the gcc tree except for
libjava. But it probably can be upgraded to automake 1.8.5 as well.
