compile problems

Hey All,
I'm getting an error with rhug-xerces.
libtool: link:
`upstream/src/org/apache/xerces/impl/msg/DOMMessages.properties.lo' is
not a valid libtool object
Any ideas. I read that this might be related to "long commands in
libtool", but I'm using the libtool that was indicated by the build
instructions. The error does indeed come after a very long libtool
command. Probably 500 lines long. 
But if this is an existing issue, why would they do this at all?
