gcj undefined reference errors

I am noticing some strange behavior with gcj whenever I have an import
where my package names and class names are the same. I get errors like
the following:
/tmp/cckdcYkP.o(.text+0x23d): undefined reference to
`md::mlib::io::mashString::mashString[in-charge](java::lang::String*)'
Is there some way to workaround this? Javac does not have a similar
problem.
