There were significant changes in the pe linker scripts, affecting relocs, over that
period, so best to keep in sync.

Well, I don't get as far as the 0-bit reloc because I run out of memory before then.

I have my own build, which has Mohans's patches in it.
I've tried with CVS binutils, as well as the older ones you talk about.
You could try out an updated binutils binaries for mingw from here:
https://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=2435
in the Snapshot package.

I've tried. see above.
This is really an ld bug. The error message comes from ld/pe-dll.c
(generate_reloc), so perhaps this discussion should be moved to binutils list.
