I didn't know Red Hat had such a service. I thought you could only install Red Hat
from CD?
In the meanwhile, I've finally got Gentoo to work on my laptop. Keeping in sync is
really easy:
# emerge sync
# emerge -p world
# emerge world
The emerge tool is really nifty. When you "emerge sync" you often get these adverts
from the companies hosting an index mirror. That's how I got to rent a hosted server
from a German company. I'm really happy with their service.
I've appointed my own ISP (skynet.be) to be the mirror for the Gentoo source
tarballs. So I've got tremendous download speed. Downloading only takes one hundredth
of the time for compiling and installing!
Maybe Red Hat could look at what works really nice with Gentoo and Portage custodian
services may very well turn into a growing and competitive business. I think Red Hat
would have quite some credibility in profiling themselves as an alternative Portage
custodian. I would definitely be interested in pointing to Red Hat verified tarballs.
If, however, I have to change deployment methods and tools ("emerge"), it should be
to get really compelling and unique benefits from such alternative technology. The
"emerge" tool is really great.
