gcc-3.3 and statically linked mingw binaries?

Has anybody encountered problems with gnu.java.locale.* not getting
_Jv_RegisterClass()'d when running statically linked Mingw binaries?
The same codebase works fine on Linux. I've used the linker (binutils
2.13.2.1) successfully with gcc-3.2 before. And the code is
definately getting linked in -- it's in the disassembly. I forced the
linker to include it by putting static references to the classes in my
code since the locale classes are normally only accessed via
reflection.
Wierd.
Also strangely, ClassLoader.getSystemClassLoader() returns null.
Any ideas?
