 FYI, I ran a build on sparc64-unknown-linux-gnu overnight and it looks
 like the linker died while creating the 32-bit libgcj.so.
 ... 
 This platform worked for 3.2, but I don't recall if we had to use a
 newer binutils or not. Any suggestions David?

I just did a successful build for this target on the current
mainline using binutils-2.13.1, so it's almost certainly a binutils
issue.
I'm running make check now.
