Runtime.getRuntime().gc() never returns in included example

Yes, you are right. 
I don't really have anything to say to my defense for jumping 
to conclusions, but I "discovered this" in my desperate efforts 
to track down a different crash. Alas, I tricked myself into believing
that the ~100-1000x slowdown I saw, was a hang.
