In fact I took this simple test case from
http://www.ociweb.com/jnb/jnbJan2003.html which provides easy
information about how to use gcj. The code they use there is identical
(see Compiled Native Interface - Invocation API), except that I
simplified it by printing nothing to the console. I suppose this worked
at one time or another, otherwise they wouldn't have used it in this
article, no?

Imho, what I submitted is as simple as it can get. Ie. it just sets up
the virtual machine. Are you sure there's no bug that creeped into the
3.3 cvs branch version at one time or another that could cause this to
stop functioning?
