Had to hand-modify makefiles to get libjava to build - did I get configuration options wrong?

I'm working on the Makefile.am patch, but I'm new to automake, and I'm
having trouble. So far I think I've figured out the process, which is:
 - modify Makefile.am
 - run automake in the gcc/libjava directory
 - if automake tells you to run some other thing (I forget the name), do so
and re-run automake
 - take a peek at Makefile.in and see if it looks OK
 - try a configure and build
Correct?
When I run automake (installed from automake-gcj-1.4.tar.gz, which is
version 1.6.3), I get a lot of output, ending in:
 Makefile.am: required file `../depcomp' not found
Should I be getting this error in the 3.2.1 released stuff?
Is there a way to fix it?
When I try to do a configure & make, I get:
 Makefile:9657: *** missing separator. Stop
Line 9657 is: @AMDEP_TRUE@@am__include@
@am__quote@./$(DEPDIR)/JIS0208_to_Unicode.Plo@am__quote@
I assume this is because of the "depcomp not found" error.
