My understanding is that GNU ar does the ranlib step, and that ranlib
is unnecessary. I assume libtool is running ar; teaching libtool not
to might be worthwhile.
Note that you can also configure --disable-static. I realize for
Windows users this can't be done, but for Linux users it should reduce
build times.
