Somehow I missed your first message... so ld was saying:
ld: fatal: relocations remain against allocatable but non-writable
sections
That doesn't make sense. What relocations are there in a static
executable?
Can you try it with binutils? If it still doesn't work, at least you
should get a more meaningful error.
