Hi Pete,
java.nio is being worked on and the SocketChannel and mapped I/O parts 
of it at least are up and running. We are awaiting paperwork from Ronald 
Veldema who has implemented much of this.
I'm not aware of anyone working on a DNS provider for JNDI. If you would 
like to contribute an implementation then we would certainly be 
interested in including it in libgcj. Note that we would require a 
copyright assignment form to be sent to the FSF (see 
http://gcc.gnu.org/contribute.html).
