Feeling kind of stupid...

Hello All,
In the past couple of weeks I have been reinvestigating Java on Linux. I
have downloaded the JDK from Sun and the Developers Kit from IBM. Now I
don't if there is something that I have missed or what, but once you get
everything all un-packed and put the binaries in the path, it complains
about not having the correct Classpath. In reading Sun's docs, it says
to use the commandline to set the classpath (as it is the prefered
method), but some of the programs depend on having an environment
variable for CLASSPATH set.
Now the real kicker, what am I supposed to set the CLASSPATH to? Where
does it point to, that piece of info is not on Sun's installation.
On the IBM DevKit, I got the tgz file, but there are no installation
instructions, other than to un-zip and un-tar the file. I think I can
figure out the 'path' stuff, but once again, what do I need to do about
the Classpath?
Any pointers to this info would be very helpful. It just seems that
either I am being stupid, or there are intentional holes in the
information Sun and IBM are leaving for us to figure out on our own.
Thanks,
Mike
