Don't we need to do this in order to process command-line arguments?
I think ideally both gij and JNI would simply use the CNI invocation
interface. We'd have all the command-line processing and
initialization in a single place.

Sometime, probably in the not-too-distant future, this thread will
also be running finalizers for us. We definitely need to keep at
least one worker thread around. In the attach case we'll have to
create such a thread.
