libtool failure

Sometimes when reconfiguring the libjava directory, libtool fails to configure
properly and I eventually get link errors.
It seems to go wrong here:
ltconfig:793: /home/jsturm/gcc/build-i686-linux/gcc/gcj
-B/home/jsturm/gcc/build-i686-linux/i686-pc-linux-gnu/libjava/
-B/home/jsturm/gcc/build-i686-linux/gcc/ -c -g -O2 -o out/conftest2.o 
conftest.java 1>&5
conftest.java:0: Can't find default package `java.lang'. Check the CLASSPATH
environment variable and the access to the archives.
1 error
If I rebuild all of GCC from scratch the problem goes away.
I'm basically stumped at this point so I'd appreciate any pointers. This is on
i686-pc-linux-gnu BTW.
