Problems running "Hello World" program.....

I noticed this too.
The problem is somewhat complex, but it involves iconv failures.
There are actually a few problems: libgcj can't report iconv failures,
and for some reason iconv can't do the conversions we request of it by
default.
One workaround is to do `export LANG=en_US.UTF-8' before running Java
programs.
We need a better fix.
