Yes, let people specify the assembly code for a write barrier (generic
code would be nice) and have gcc insert and adapt the code when
appropriate.

As stated in http://gcc.gnu.org/onlinedocs/gcc_15.html#SEC172 ,
building a RTL expression from a text description is possible. The
drawback is that RTL expressions depend on what you're generating code
for. Maybe we should explore the possibility of loading tree node
expressions (with the benefit of having them worked out by Gcc) -- but
this is even more adventurous than trying to load RTL.
