That can't happen. ELF program images are already mapped well above the
4GB boundary by the Alpha/Linux kernel.
I have no idea why I can successfully build libgcj without this patch.
(I still get a lot of warnings "conversion from pointer to integer of a
different size" while building libgcj, but haven't investigated yet
because the runtime doesn't seem broken.)
