automake & libgcj

Is there a recipe for getting an automake that works correctly with
libgcj?
Using redhat's automake 1.4 (hacked to remove the "file can't be in a
subdirectory" error) works, but the resulting Makefile.in is not
formatted as well as the one in cvs.
Using the latest cvs automake I get:
$ automake
configure.in: 32: `AM_PROG_LIBTOOL' is obsolete, use `AC_PROG_LIBTOOL'
instead
automake: Makefile.am: Java source seen but `GCJ' not defined in
`configure.in'
automake: configure.in: required file `../depcomp' not found
