ld for gcc and libgcj

OK, I have downloaded, built and installed binutils 2.9.1 and have
tried to rebuild libgcj with the new ld and as:
	../libgcj-2.95.1/configure \
	 --prefix=/export/home/cdornan/gnu/gcc-2.95.2 \
	 --with-as=/home/cdornan/bin/as \
	 --with-ld=/home/cdornan/bin/ld
but the build breaks down:
	rm -fr .libs/libzgcj.la .libs/libzgcj.* .libs/libzgcj.*
	gcc -shared adler32.lo compress.lo crc32.lo deflate.lo gzio.lo infblock.lo infcodes.lo inffast.lo inflate.lo inftrees.lo infutil.lo trees.lo uncompr.lo zutil.lo -lc -Wl,-soname -Wl,libzgcj.so.0 -o .libs/libzgcj.so.0.0.0
	ld: warning: option -o appears more than once, first setting taken
	ld: fatal: file libzgcj.so.0: cannot open file: No such file or directory
	ld: fatal: File processing errors. No output written to .libs/libzgcj.so.0.0.0
	collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
	make[1]: *** [libzgcj.la] Error 1
Is this because gcc was built with a different ld? Do I need to
rebuild gcc with the new ld?
[As before, I am building libgcj-2.95.1 with gcc-2.95.2.]
