Boehm-gc, linux-threads and SMP.... crash

I reproduced the GCTest crash on a quad-processor Linux SMP host using a
fairly old (post-2.95.1) libgcj.
Using an updated libgcj seemed to eliminate the crash, however... it now
runs reliably, although a bit erratic. Sometimes it completes in 7
seconds, sometimes it pauses for 20 seconds or more.
