basic configuration of gcj

Hello all.
I've configured, compiled and installed egcs-19990418.tar.gz in a
directoy $HOME/egcs and the same for libgcj-snapshot-1999年04月21日.tar.gz
in $HOME/libgcj. (I don't have root access, so /usr/local is not an
option.) This is on a linux box, BTW.
I get the following:
gcj --main=HelloWorld -o HelloWorld HelloWorld.java
HelloWorld.java:0: Can't find default package `java.lang'. Check the
CLASSPATH environment variable and the access to the archives.
1 error
So, what should the CLASSPATH var be aiming at?
Any help very much appreciated.
