This works right on my x86 Linux box. I agree that char ff2f should
have a digit form of -1.
Did you configure with fast Character or small Character? (The
default is small.)
Do you have a java-aware gdb around? If so, could you write a small
test program and see why this fails?

I get fewer than this. I think with KEYS=libgcj I get about 5.
(Right now it's hard to check exactly since my tree is in a
non-working state.)
