gcj install questions

Hi,
I have downloaded the gcj (egcs-java-19990405.tar) file from cygnus 
ftp site.
However, there is no way to compile the code standalone (ie
no configure script). Does gcj have to be compiled within 
egcs 1.1.[12] source directory? Since the end result of the
compile is are standalone executables, I think one should be able 
to compile it independent of egcs src directory, or atleast
point to by some parameter to configure.
(I have egcs 1.1.1 but it is not something I want to mess 
with right now).
As a last resort I can download and install egcs under my
home directory.
