small beeping sound from pi when i connect to battery

Tue Oct 14, 2025 1:10 pm

I’m using a 12 V battery, which I step down to 5 V using a buck converter. The 5 V output is supplied to the Raspberry Pi through the TP1 and TP12 test points located beneath the USB-C port, as I prefer not to power the Pi via USB-C directly. When I connect the battery, I hear a faint beeping sound. The Pi operates normally, but I’m concerned whether this noise could cause issues with long-term use.

Is the buck convertor or the pi making the beep ?

As the RPI has no component meant to produce sound (no speaker or buzzer) the comment "the sound is coming from the PI" is meaningless.

you need to find out where the sound is actually coming from! There are two likely suspects, a coil or a ceramic capacitor. A coil can make sound if its windings can move with an auditable frequency, and some ceramic capacitors can create sound if they vibrate as piezo electric components.

I suspect that the sound is coming from a coil most likely a coil from the buck converter. but normally the coils do not produce any sound.

If you power the PI using the normal official power supply through the USB-C port does the beep also happen?

if not I suspect your 12V to 5V converter output an unclean 5V. with a large AC component that the PI cannot handle.

Test points (such as TP1 and TP12) are NOT meant as connectors. So you might want to try the USB port instead of test points.
