I'm trying to understand how file thumbnails work in Cinnamon/Nemo on Gentoo and which packages are actually needed.

I want thumbnails for common formats such as PNG/JPG, PDF, MP4/MKV, MP3/FLAC, EPUB, RAW, SVG, etc.

I know different packages provide thumbnailers (e.g. evince provides evince-thumbnailer, ffmpegthumbnailer handles videos), but I'm confused about how Nemo actually discovers and uses them.

For example, do I really need to install the full app-text/evince just to get PDF thumbnails, even if I use another PDF viewer? Are there recommended/minimal packages for the common formats?

Basically, I'd like to understand how the thumbnail system works on Gentoo + Cinnamon + Nemo and what the recommended package setup is, without installing unnecessary applications just because they happen to provide a thumbnailer.

[引用] I don't believe thumbnails are handled any different on Gentoo than any other distro. I don't use Nemo but I believe it works like many other file managers where most settings are done in the preferences menus and or config files. Nemo makes use of the thumbnails stored locally in ~/.cache/thumbnails. AFAIK: file managers don't generate thumbnails. You need additional apps to do this and they will come with their own set of dependencies and USE flags. The more formats you want to support the more apps you may require.

At the minium you would need media-video/ffmpeg and media-video/ffmpegthumbnailer. The app xfce-base/tumbler might provide you with your other needs. Here is a link based on Linux Mint that might give you some guidance.

A word of caution: Even though thumbnails are small in size their accumulated footprint can consume large amounts of disk space.
