An electronically displayed map on the radar display that may depict data such as airports, heliports, runway centerline extensions, hospital emergency landing areas, NAVAIDs (navigational aids) and fixes, reporting points, airway/route centerlines, boundaries, hand-off points, special-use tracks, obstructions, prominent geographic features, map alignment indicators, range accuracy marks, minimum vectoring altitudes, etc. This serves the important function of providing the controller with a permanent reference. The required information for preparation of a video map is usually derived from a fine-grain photo plate scanned in synchronization with the rotation of a radar antenna or from computer memory.
