Dr Mark Calarco, Addiction Labs of America CEO, said, 'It's critical that we know how different people, based on their genetic makeup, process or metabolise cannabis or CBD, and that's information
pharmacogenetic testing could tell us.
"Over and over and over again, studies show that patients who have (particular) genetic defects have more toxicity, for example, than patients who don't," which could cause adverse reactions to a drug, said Relling, who studies the clinical application of
pharmacogenetics and investigates approaches to improving drug therapy for pediatric leukemia patients.
The choice of psychotropic medication is complex, and although we would like
pharmacogenetics to be the only answer to why every patient does or does not respond to a medication, it is not.
Pharmacogenetics also plays an important role in polypharmacy with elderly patients by averting ADRs from drug-drug interactions.
The field of
pharmacogenetics can provide us with tools to deliver safer, more effective care and reduce the likelihood of adverse drug reactions."
Gupta noted, pointing to the Human Genome Project as a tool that can be used to help with
pharmacogenetics moving forward.
We firmly believe that the best approach for global
pharmacogenetics is to guide warfarin dosing by using a pharmacogenetic-based algorithm that also accounts for the effect of admixture or ancestry proportions.
This does not preclude an eventual role for
pharmacogenetics in the selection of analgesics.

According to the research done by Catherine Olivier, from University of Montreal's School of Public Health, from 1997 to 2003, there were 401 publications on pharmacogenomics identified in the PubMed database and 67 percent of them were published in a single journal,
Pharmacogenetics.
A number of genetic association studies examined SNPs as these are considered as the primary genetic determinants of the inter-individual variability in susceptibility to disease, response to treatment (
pharmacogenetics) and clinical outcomes (7-9).
