After several hours of one-way travel into the cave, we found ourselves quickly retreating from a wide, low
crawlway when a small trickle of water nearby started to rush faster and back up into drier portions of our constricted space.
In May 1986, after two years of digging, they finally uncovered a
crawlway to a large room.
"Koryta has done his speleological homework, and when he's got his characters inching through claustrophobic
crawlways and wormways in the cold and dark, he knows what he's talking about.
"And even though we're 20 metres below street level there's another four metres of
crawlways below us that give even more access."
When we were designing the
crawlways and things like that, it was like a live-action videogame.

I coped and so did our photographer Steven Brough but he saw several visitors misjudge distances and bang their head on the top of the narrow
crawlways.

The Hole has a bad reputation among cavers because of the 4-foot-high Bathtub passage and many miles of other small
crawlways. It was named after Holloch Cave in Switzerland, where Holloch means hole of the devil.
