In our research, high-resolution visible satellite data revealed horizontally propagating gravity waves in the UTLS outflow emanating from thunderstorms near the western edge of a large
cloud shield on 3-4 June 2015.
While they can be organized in a linear fashion, their characteristic signature on an infrared satellite image is an oval-shaped cold (high)
cloud shield that can easily cover the entire state of Wyoming, with tops that reach FL600.
