[ə′sȯlt ‚fīr] (ordnance)
Fire delivered by attacking troops as they close with an enemy to engage him at close range or in hand-to-hand fighting, usually delivered from the hip or the standing position at a sustained rate. Also known as advancing fire.
In artillery, extremely accurate, short-range destruction fire at point targets.
