However, it is straightforward to apply UIP by hand to programs written in the applicative-order functional language Scheme.(15) An empirical evaluation for a few hand-transformed programs was conducted using MIT Scheme (with the "compiler" option set, so as to generate compiled code) running under Ultrix on a DECstation 5000/33 with 24MB of RAM.(16) The running time and speedups obtained over the standard implementation are shown in Table III.
