Strindberg, Miss Julie is one of the most transformative plays of all time, all working-class drama has a debt to the play - even shows like Coronation Street and EastEnders.
Of course, one sees the difficulty: there is no discussion by Ibsen of Nietzsche, and though Nietzsche refers to Pillars of Society, it did not seem to impress him and he expresses disdain for what he takes to be Ibsen's views--perhaps influenced by
Strindberg's negative attitude towards Ibsen--referring to him as "this typical old maid--[who] sets out to poison the good conscience, the natural aspects of sexual love" (89).
As for Bergman's adaption of
Strindberg, many critics converged around one point: It was as if these pieces now had been performed for the very first time.
Instead, Melrose says,
Strindberg was inspired by Beethoven's questing, surprising late sonatas to create "a kind of a distillation and summation of all the themes he'd done before."
Strindberg even nodded to this inspiration with one of his titles, The Ghost Sonata, which joins Storm, Burned House, The Pelican and The Black Glove in rotating rep under Melrose's direction, and with the same cast.
Bak asserts, "scholars [of Streetcar] cannot seem to agree if Williams is interpreting
Strindberg, Chekhov, Nietzsche, or Darwin"("Criticism on A Streetcar Named Desire: A Bibliographic Survey, 1947-2003," Cercles 10 [2004]: 9); the allusion noted here suggests that some renewed attention to the influence of Ibsen may be in order.
