OSI Model

Our approach is to develop single cross layer intrusion detection system that operates on dissimilar layers of the OSI model and to identify dissimilar types of attacks on various layers of the OSI model.

The OSI Model (Figure 2) divides the network process into seven layers, of which each has a specific area of functionality.

To put it another way, while network equipment was traditionally only aware of Layers 1-3 in the open system interconnection (OSI) model, with SDN architecture, each networking device has awareness of all seven layers in the OSI model and can make decisions based on the content in those layers.
