Mawson

a scientific station and the main base of the Australian antarctic expedition. Opened on Feb. 13, 1954, the station is located in a glacier-free part of the coast along Holme Bay (67°36’ S lat. and 62°52’ E long.) on Mac-Robertson Land in eastern Antarctica. About 30 persons live at the station throughout the winter. It has more than 20 buildings of various types and a landing strip. Scientific observations in aerometeorology, geophysics, glaciology, oceanography, and biology are conducted. The station also serves as a base for exploring the surrounding parts of eastern Antarctica. The station was named in honor of D. Mawson
