Karpinsk

a city in Sverdlovsk Oblast, RSFSR; located on the Tur’ia River (Ob’ basin). It is the terminus of a 50-km railroadbranch from the city of Serov. Population, 38, 000 (1970). Browncoal is extracted in Karpinsk by strip mining. Local industriesinclude the manufacture and repair of mining equipment, theconstruction of electrical machinery, a cotton-spinning factory, and food processing. Karpinsk is the site of a technicum special-izing in machine building. The city was formed in 1941 from thesettlements of Bogoslovskii and Ugol’nye Kopi and named inhonor of Academician A. P. Karpinskii.
