Supporters and critics of the proposed purchase by Canada of 65 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) aircraft, also known as the F-35, agree on one thing: the mission determines the kit, not the other way around.

"These types of contracts are long and it's difficult to say what the effect will be at this stage, but we are involved in the new JSF contracts.

This includes an expansion of the JSF major unit assembly facility and a 4,600[m.sup.2] extension to the company's advanced forming and assembly facility (AFAF).

The Financial Times added that the UAE has recently "requested from the Pentagon classified information about the JSF jet, and the US replied by saying it is trying to finalize a revision of possible arms sales to Gulf states, which is not yet complete." According to the report, "This delay reflects the dilemma of the administration of President Barack Obama in achieving balance between diplomatic and military priorities in the Middle East region.

The committee understands that current plans for the F136 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) propulsion system would complete the development in sufficient time to conduct a first competitive contract award in fiscal year 2012, concurrent with the award for the sixth lot of low-rate initial production aircraft.

This approval is also important for TEI as it would produce "blisk spool" (requiring the most developed jet engine production technology), which is an important part of the engine that would be used in manufacturing of F-35 JSF.

Despite the title, it is not limited to the F-35 JSF program.

Although the JSF is supposed to be in full-rate production in about seven years, the services say they cannot wait that long.

Preserving the JSF Lifecycle: Central to the JSF architecture is the JSF lifecycle, which is illustrated in Figure 1 below.
