Edmund. 1656--1742, English astronomer and mathematician. He predicted the return of the comet now known as Halley's comet, constructed charts of magnetic declination, and produced the first wind maps

Halley
(until 1977, Halley Bay), a British scientific station at the coast of Coats Land, Western Antarctica; situated on the surface of the Brunt Ice Shelf. Halley, which began operating on Jan. 16, 1956, has a wintertime staff of ten to 38 persons. Meteorological, geophysical, and glaciological observations are made at the station, and medical and biological research is conducted. Halley serves as a base for field studies in adjacent regions of Antarctica.
