data-link to explore the Guaymas Basin, about 2,000 meters (1.24 miles) deep in the Gulf of California.
"We made a major move to mortgages in 1993 with the acquisition of Data-Link. At the time, from a technology standpoint it wasn't as strong as our competitor's systems.
Not a totally independent assessment, obviously, but a reflection of the vigorous investment that's been made in Data-Link.
When Fiserv acquired Data-Link, it was only marginally profitable and "we didn't have a lot of product understanding," says Frank Martire, president of Fiserv's Bank & Credit Union Group.
"We did the Data-Link acquisition in 1993, and now, five years later, we have all the pieces in place," says Layden.
The core piece of Fiserv's mortgage banking business is the Data-Link Mortgage Servicing System, developed and marketed by the Fiserv Mortgage Products Division.

Data-Link's architecture is the key to the system, reiterates Westmoreland.
Data-Link offers the only online, real-time mortgage servicing software out there, claims Pete Singer, assistant vice president of servicing for Harris Bank in Chicago.
In March, Columbia, South Carolina--based Fleet Mortgage Group--the nation's seventh-largest residential mortgage servicer, with a portfolio of 1.4 million loans, according to Fiserv and the Mortgage Bankers Association of America (MBA)--signed a multiyear commitment to the Fiserv Data-Link Loan Servicing System.
