Childeric I
Date of birth unknown; died 481 or 482. King of one of the tribes of Salian Franks. Ruled from about 457 in a region centered at Tournai. Father of Clovis I.
In alliance with the Roman commander Aegidius, Childeric fought first the Visigoths in 463 and then the Saxons. Under him the Franks continued their conquest of northern Gaul. In 1653, Childeric’s tomb was found at Tournai; it contained a battle axe, a sword, a spear, gold ornaments, and gold coins.
