Etymology

From Proto-Tepiman *ʼaʼana ("wing, feather"),^[1] from Proto-Uto-Aztecan *ʼa~ʼaŋa(pu) ("wing", via reduplication).^[2] The *ŋ has shifted to *n and final *-pu is absent in Southern Uto-Aztecan.

Cognate with Northern Tepehuan ánai , Huichol ꞌaná and Central Tarahumara aná .
