Flowing plant(s)

[edit ]

I've just corrected all 12 instances of "Flowing plant(s)" to "Flowering plant(s)". Some had been up for years.Admittedly only 12, but no false positives. Worth a rule? Ϣere Spiel Chequers 20:31, 8 January 2025 (UTC) [reply ]

of of

[edit ]

I think we already have a rule that covers "of of" with one intervening space. But I've just dealt with a large number of "of of"s with two intervening spaces. Can the code be tweaked? Ϣere Spiel Chequers 20:18, 9 January 2025 (UTC) [reply ]

@WereSpielChequers: It looks like the "Duplicated words" rule already covers duplicated words separated with 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 spaces. I just edited Second Empire architecture in the United States and Canada and it changed "of of" (with two spaces) to "of". GoingBatty (talk) 19:34, 28 January 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
Thanks, not sure why I noticed so many but thanks for the reassurance about the code. I may look again in a few months to see if another batch emerges Ϣere Spiel Chequers 19:25, 2 February 2025 (UTC) [reply ]

Telefonica vs Telefónica

[edit ]

In my recent edit to the O2 (UK) using AWB, AWB's typo rules changed "Telefonica" to "Telefónica". My edit was reverted by CalebEvans, who wrote in their edit summart "Telefonica is legally registered in the UK without the accent". Therefore, should we remove this rule? Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 19:29, 28 January 2025 (UTC) [reply ]

Although the registration is without the accent (and the process seems to allow the use of accent), if you look at O2's "About Us" and other UK company owned website material they stylise the name with the accent. Despite the editor's valid comment I think it should stay and your edit reinstated (JMO). Neils51 (talk) 13:34, 11 February 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
@Neils51: I appreciate your reply. I see that the bottom of https://www.o2.co.uk/ uses both "Telefonica UK Limited" and "Telefónica UK Limited". Therefore, I do not wish to get into an edit war about the accent when the company can't be consistent. GoingBatty (talk) 16:25, 11 February 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
Thanks, could ask them. "How would you like your company name to be shown on your Wikipedia page? We are confused......!". Neils51 (talk) 21:03, 11 February 2025 (UTC) [reply ]

in not known

[edit ]

I've just patrolled "in not known" and changed 15 out of 17 either to is unknown or is not known, the other two are in quotations. One example had been up since 2023 so i suspect we might not yet have a rule that covers this? N.B. this one came from User:Phlsph7/AI spelling and grammar suggestions for vital articles. the among and the among the

[edit ]

More from this AI thingy. I'm going through "the among" and two common patterns emerge, both with over thirty instances. the among the needing to change to among the and the among not followed by the to among the. There are some false positives but one of those is AMONG not among. Ϣere Spiel Chequers 12:02, 4 February 2025 (UTC) [reply ]

Divesture

[edit ]

I've noticed that divestiture of often incorrectly written as divesture. Does anyone want to add a rule for this? ―Panamitsu (talk) 22:13, 6 February 2025 (UTC) [reply ]

Will be done. Neils51 (talk) 13:00, 11 February 2025 (UTC) [reply ]

Short Description

[edit ]

Is it possible that the text within {{short description|String of text that sometimes contains typos}} is not checked for AWB typo fixes? If so could this be added to the screening process? I've just found a typo from last September. Ϣere Spiel Chequers 18:37, 7 February 2025 (UTC) [reply ]

@WereSpielChequers: Yes, the short description is not checked: Typo fixing is prevented within: image names, template names and parameters. There's phab:T291289 from 2021, phab:T100312 from 2012, and my phab:T100732 from 2013. -- John of Reading (talk) 18:48, 7 February 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
Ah, and there was me thinking for months that one or more of our short description writers was prone to typos. Does alt text also have the same problem? Ϣere Spiel Chequers 19:00, 7 February 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
Alt text does get fixed: Special:Diff/1274603529 -- John of Reading (talk) 08:39, 8 February 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
Well that's a relief. I'm thinking of writing a signpost article on my recent experience of using AI to find errors in Wikipedia, would you mind if I use your comment about those phab links in it? Ϣere Spiel Chequers 16:28, 8 February 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
No problem. -- John of Reading (talk) 18:03, 8 February 2025 (UTC) [reply ]

"expecially" -> especially -"expecially for you"

[edit ]

Can we add expecially -> especially -"expecially for you"? I've done one pass manually. Ϣere Spiel Chequers 16:28, 8 February 2025 (UTC) [reply ]

goverment -> government

[edit ]

I was assuming we had this, but I've just fixed a bunch including one from September. Ϣere Spiel Chequers 20:36, 8 February 2025 (UTC) [reply ]

a MBA -> an MBA

[edit ]

I'm working my way through well over 100 of these, but we might need specific code to change "a MBA" to "an MBA". Ϣere Spiel Chequers 18:30, 10 February 2025 (UTC) [reply ]

Seems sorted now. Neils51 (talk) 12:56, 11 February 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
I've manually fixed over 100. Do you mean it is sorted because I have done that, or because the code has changed? Ϣere Spiel Chequers 23:29, 11 February 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
I wrote a regex to cover this and did a few to test, then they all disappeared which I presume was your edits. I'll do a bit more testing before loading it. Neils51 (talk) 10:49, 12 February 2025 (UTC) [reply ]

An UNESCO -> A UNESCO

[edit ]

As a mirror to the MBA one above we have 200 or so of "An/an UNESCO -> A/a UNESCO" with an exception for "Tràng An UNESCO" and "Hoi An. UNESCO-MAB" - I'll leave these ones up for testing a regex. Ϣere Spiel Chequers 16:49, 12 February 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
