Welcome!

[edit ]

Hi, and welcome to the Birds WikiProject ! As you've probably guessed, we're a group of editors working to improve Wikipedia's coverage of bird-related topics.

A few features that you may find helpful:

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask any experienced member of the project; we'll be happy to help you. Again, welcome! We look forward to seeing you around! MeegsC (talk) 17:00, 12 December 2020 (UTC) [reply ]

Hi MeegsC! Many thanks for your welcome message and your recent edits. I'm happy to contribute some of my free time to edit Wikipedia within my expertise, but sometimes I'm not sure what I am allowed to edit or how to deal with certain editorial issues. I saw there is a mentoring program and I wondered if you could mentor me so I'm not doing any disasters :) Thanks! Olahgy (talk) 17:21, 12 December 2020 (UTC) [reply ]

Mentoring

[edit ]

Hi Olahgy: I'd be happy to! Feel free to ping me any time you have a question. Some of the things I was doing on the macaw society article are standard "Manual of Style" things (WP:MOS). That's a HUGE document to go through, but over time you'll pick up a lot of the more common stuff. It has a search function that lets you check particular things if you're not sure how to do something. Tambopata is on my bucket list. My friend Pepe Rojas worked there years ago, and keeps telling me I need to visit. ;) MeegsC (talk) 17:35, 12 December 2020 (UTC) [reply ]

By the way, in answer to your question, you can freely edit any bird article you want to! The only articles that I'd suggest you avoid editing, to avoid any hint of conflict of interest, are Wildlife Messengers and The Macaw Society, since you're clearly involved with both. See WP:COI for further details. MeegsC (talk) 17:47, 12 December 2020 (UTC) [reply ]
Thanks MeegsC for your suggestions! I bookmarked the link you sent as a go-to manual when I have any doubts, and will ping you if I have further questions. I know Pepe, he is an amazing birdwatcher guide! Hope we can all go back to Tambopata once the pandemic is over. Meanwhile, there is time to publish some papers and edit Wiki articles. Copying licensed material requires attribution

[edit ]

Hi. I see in a recent addition to Bycatch you included material from a webpage that is available under a compatible Creative Commons Licence. That's okay, but you have to give attribution so that our readers are made aware that you copied the prose rather than wrote it yourself. It's also required under the terms of the license. I've added the attribution for this particular instance. Please make sure that you follow this licensing requirement when copying from compatibly-licensed material in the future. — Diannaa (talk) 13:56, 29 December 2022 (UTC) [reply ]

Hi Diannaa, Many thanks for this information! We actually published that paper under the CCL so strictly speaking we (the authors) wrote that sentence :) but I understand the argument from the Wikipedia's perspective. I will of course use this attribution when including texts from CCL papers in the future, also, in most cases I tend to write just a summary sentence with our main findings. Olahgy (talk) 18:29, 29 December 2022 (UTC) [reply ]
The material is released under license, which means that if you copy it, you are supposed to provide the attribution as required under the terms of the license. Please do so, even if all the authors have agreed to republish the content here. Thanks, — Diannaa (talk) 01:10, 30 December 2022 (UTC) [reply ]

[edit ]

Hello! Voting in the 2023 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 11 December 2023. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2023 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page . If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:40, 28 November 2023 (UTC) [reply ]

PROD of Wildlife Messengers

[edit ]

Hi, I put the Wildlife Messengers wiki page up for proposed deletion for the following:

"Under WP:GNG, it has near no coverage, and most of the coverage it does have is from the Wildlife Messengers website. Additionally, the person who wrote almost all of the article (Olahgy) is a director of Wildlife Messengers, which is a major COI."

That isn't to say the topic is entirely irrelevant, just that I don't feel it is important enough for its own article. For instance, the reference to the film in the Macaw Society wiki page should probably be extended, if anything. Uncreativenaming (talk) 08:19, 30 May 2026 (UTC) [reply ]
