Just went to work on an article and noticed that, within the last few days, a pair of parentheses have appeared in some speciesboxes between the name of a conservation status and the relevant system (ie. Extinct () (IUCN 2.3)
, Presumed Extinct () (NatureServe)
at Neoplanorbis carinatus . I assume a change was made to the extinct statuses specifically, as this doesn't seem to appear in the taxoboxes of species assessed as extant, and these parentheses are being left over from the template attempting to display a date with |extinct= when none is present - in the case of N. carinatus and other Neoplanorbis species, the relevant assessments don't give an estimate of when the species likely went extinct, so I've left this parameter out on purpose. The parentheses didn't appear when I worked on this article last week, so I'm hoping it's not a difficult fix. Ethmostigmus 🌿 (talk | contribs) 06:46, 15 March 2026 (UTC) Reply
- Fixed. That's due to a change I made a couple of days ago. I'm changing the conservation status handling to use a module as the code in {{taxobox/species }} is so hard to follow (and much is unused). The parenthesis should only have been shown when there is an extinction date. |answered= parameter to no to reactivate your request.Description of suggested change: Diff 1343464920 caused ESA threatened status to incorrectly display the image for extinct. I genuinely have no clue as to what could have caused this through half an hour of testing, so unfortunately, I can not give an exact suggestion.

- That isn't very feasible. Automatic taxoboxes "know" where a clade falls in the taxonomic hierarchy due to parent/child relationships between the taxonomy templates. A single clade rank in a manual taxobox could be anywhere in the hierarchy; between phylum and class, between family and order, etc. Manual taxoboxes won't know where a clade is supposed to be displayed. Manual taxoboxes do have a set of unranked parameters;
|unranked_familia=,|unranked_infraordo=. These display just above the non-unranked taxon (i.e.,|unranked familia=display above family and below superfamily). Many of the remaining unranked values are actually clades, and taxoboxes could be altered to accept e.g.|clade_familia=, function like|unranked_familia=, but display "clade" as the label rather than "unranked". However, 99.7% of articles are using automatic taxoboxes, and the number of manual taxoboxes continues to decline. At this point, it doesn't seem worth it to add new parameters for manual taxoboxes. - I agree with Plantdrew. There's no point in making manual taxoboxes even more complex by adding a completely new set of

@Jts1882:, I saw your edit for |extinct= in the documentation. Manual taxoboxes do not show a dagger symbol when extinct is specified.
However, more broadly, we should think about copying the documentation of non-taxonomic rank parameters to somewhere under Wikipedia:Automated taxobox system. The only documentation for most of the parameters is here, but with few remaining manual taxoboxes, this is not an intuitive place to look for documentation. Also, maybe we should be thinking about marking manual taxoboxes as largely deprecated? Plantdrew (talk) 15:18, 19 May 2026 (UTC) Reply
