On the etymology of the word

[edit ]

Nişanyan states that çelebi originates from Assyrian tsalab ("cross", by extension, "ruler", "cleric", "God") and was passed to Turkic speakers via Maniheistic intermediates rather than an immediate Arabic origin.

Moreover, reflex of Arabic "djallabi" would be calab/celeb in Turkish, and the semantic matching is overstretching at best.

from Nişanyan : ...from Old Turkic çalab "a supreme man, affandi, god, lord". This word is a loan from Assyrian ṣəlab or ṣəlīb "1, 85.106.108.96 (talk) 14:44, 3 June 2023 (UTC) Arminden (talk) 18:26, 30 March 2025 (UTC) [reply ]

Merger

[edit ]

There was no good way for keeping apart the two pages, one about the title and one about all the rest. The many unintended repetitions and overlaps are good proof for that. Now, as one page, not too large either, the art. offers a good overview of the topic, with all its derivates. I might have missed a technical aspect here and there, but that's what we have our diligent specialised colleagues and their never sleeping bots for :) Arminden (talk) 19:31, 30 March 2025 (UTC) [reply ]

@Arminden: That won't fly. Given the existence of all these "Çelebi"-relevant articles, one article cannot cover it all. At a minimum, a disambiguation page must exist, because people and places cannot mix as subtopics, neither as set index nor as broad concept article. And in that case, this article must decide which meaning it wants to cover, with the non-covered topics being disambiguated. And let's not forget the Pokémon.
In a nutshell, you need to show that a WP:PRIMARYTOPIC "Çelebi" exists. Failing that, this page will be a DAB page. Paradoctor (talk) 22:11, 30 March 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
Hi.
  1. I took the measure because the separation into 2 pages DIDN'T WORK - pls read what I wrote. So starting from reality, pragmatically.
  2. There is only one root for the title and derived personal & place names.
  3. The Pokemon is indeed something different, and can be treated as such. It's totally commonplace, I've seen it so many times.
I was confused when I arrived at "Çelebi (title)", and even more so when I found the DAB page, with LOTS of repetitions and overlaps. I tried to disentangle the two at first, and only gave up when noticing it can't possibly work. So reality check.
Your arguments, if I may, sound strictly theoretical. So it's about actual problems vs being against by principle. The user is better served now, and that's the only valid criterion in a reference work. I hope we'll be able to swiftly agree. Cheers, Arminden (talk) 22:25, 30 March 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
I was confused when you brought up the Pokemon, because I didn't come across it here and most certainly didn't remove it - or anything else for that matter. It doesn't belong here! It's written with c, not ç or ch, and probably reads like Seleby. That's why it's listed at the Celebi DAB!
I'll add that DAB to the See also. Fine now? Cheers, Arminden (talk) 22:30, 30 March 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
read what I wrote WP:DBAD
  1. What is the topic of this article,
  2. why is it the WP:PRIMARYTOPIC,
  3. and which sources support that claim?
That ambiguously-named topics share a common etymological root is not grounds to group them together. One meaning per article, unless it is a WP:SETINDEX or a WP:BROADCONCEPT article.
Your arguments, if I may, sound strictly theoretical WP:POLICY is not theoretical, it is what the community has decided it wants done. If you don't understand how and why a policy is applicable, ask for clarification. That's how WP:CONSENSUS building is supposed to work. Paradoctor (talk) 22:46, 30 March 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
Sorry, I did remove the Pokemon unintentionally. I kept it on the clipboard but lost it eventually. Arminden (talk) 22:52, 30 March 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
Back to base 1: IT DIDN'T WORK.
Ich bin ebenfalls (auch) deutsch sozialisiert, weiß sehr wohl was Sie meinen, aber auf enWiki läuft es i.d.R. etwas anders, pragmatischer und mehr Benutzer-bezogen, was ich auch sehr gut finde.
Let's see if there is anyone else who's against it. If not, please, let's drop it.
Sorry, but I'll be closing the session for now. Thanks and have a good night! Arminden (talk) 22:57, 30 March 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
WP:ENGLISHPLEASE. And stop talking about me. My person is not the topic of discussion, and it is not relevant to it. Discuss the contribution, not the contributor.
IT DIDN'T WORK I don't know what exactly you mean by that, but it does not really matter. What is clear is that your solution does not work either. The term "Çelebi" is ambiguous, therefore a dab page must exist. If that dab is not here, then here must be about the WP:PRIMARYTOPIC. Which takes us back to the questions I posed to you. Please WP:ENGAGE with them. Paradoctor (talk) 23:12, 30 March 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
