"No Mill Road Tesco" Campaign
[edit ]"No Mill Road Tesco" is a campaign organised by residents of Cambridge with the aim of preventing Tesco from opening a store on Cambridge's Mill Road, a street running just to the south of the centre of Cambridge which is is a lively, cosmopolitan area home to many independent shops, delicatessens, cafes and curry houses.
Mill Road has its own website site which describes the area as "a robust and thriving area of Cambridge, England with a surprisingly strong sense of community considering the extremely mobile local population and the fact that a major trunk road runs right through our midst."
In 2007, shop space on Mill Road became avialable when Wilko moved out of its premises. After Tesco expressed an interest in taking the space, a No Mill Road Tesco compaign was started which collected over 4,000 signatures for a petition which was handed to Cambridge City Council in late October.
The Campaign is currently (March 2009) supported by the following groups:
- Cambridge Green Party
- Cambridge Liberal Democrats
- Cambridge Muslims
- Cambridgeshire Respect
- City of Cambridge Residents Trust
- David Howarth MP
- EMRAG (East Mill Road Action Group)
- Friends of the Earth (Cambridge)
- Mill Road Community Improvement Group
- Mill Road traders network
- Romsey Action
- Romsey Garden Club
- Romsey Labour Party
The Campaign has generated coverage in local Cambridge media [1]
The campaigners have also created a group on Facebook [2]
