Sam Yo is a British actor, former ordained Buddhist monk [1] and Peloton cycling instructor.[2]

Early Life & Career

Yo is first-generation Thai/Chinese, he was born and raised in London.[3] He trained at the Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, graduating with a Diploma in movement and dance. Yo was extremely active growing up, participating in several sports such as football, athletics and Muay Thai.[4] He spent time as an ordained monk in Thailand as a means to get in touch with his heritage and explore his culture.[5]

Theatre

Prior to becoming a Peloton instructor, Yo taking his stage name (Yo Santhaveesuk) was a professional actor since 2000.[6] appearing in his first Tony award winning show The King & I at the London Palladium with Jason Scott Lee and Elaine Paige.[7] He continued to work in various roles on stage playing Ching Ho in Thoroughly Modern Millie [8] , John in Anything Goes and Chinese Elvis in Martha Josie and the Chinese Elvis.[9] In 2018 he once again joined the cast of The King and I at the London Palladium with Ken Watanabe and Keli O’ Hara marking 18 years since his West End debut, with the same show and theatre.[10] Yo can also be seen as ensemble, in the cinema release of this production.[11]

Film and TV

Yo’s most notable on screen credits are, Panit in BBC’s Eastenders [12] and Re-Kill as Nyguyen.[13] Other projects also include Ninja Assassin which was directed by James McTiegue.[14] Further roles with Yo's appearance include a Security Guard in Red 2 [15] and Rambahadur Limbu in Victoria Cross Heroes.[16] In 2018 he played Barman in Strangers with Anthony Wong and John Simm.[17]

Health and Fitness

Yo has been personal training and teaching group fitness classes since 2007, earning his NASM Level 3 certification.[18] In 2019, Yo was recruited out of 500 instructors by Peloton, after an 8-month audition process. Yo is said to bring mindfulness to his teaching practice, mixing physical and mental awareness to his sessions. [19]

Personal Life

Yo is a huge film buff, Lego enthusiast, and self-proclaimed comic book nerd. He has a superman tattoo on his right shoulder which he accredits to his love for Bon Jovi as well as all things superhero-related. [20]
