Vampire Survivor is not a roguelike

[edit ]
Latest comment: 10 months ago 4 comments3 people in discussion

Vampire Survivor has none of the traits of roguelikes mentioned in the opening paragraph of the article, it's just an arcade-style game with meta-progression. The article given as a source stating games like it constitute a subgenre of roguelikes only says it has roguelike elements and does not say it is a roguelike game, nor does it claim that there is an entire subgenre of roguelikes with these elements. Given that the game only game out two years ago, I find it extremely unlikely that it has already spawned a distinct genre. Since the claim is not sound and misleads people as to the nature of roguelikes, I believe that claim should be removed. 128.187.116.4 (talk) 01:15, 24 January 2024 (UTC) Reply

It has permadeath (you can't even save during one run) and has procedural elements in terms of the leveling bonuses. RSes call it such. It probably fails many of the Berlin Interpretation traits of a true "roguelike" but absolutely fits into "roguelite" but because there is a huge gray area of these terms, we purposely avoid "roguelite" and call such games "roguelikes". Incredible. You're everything wrong with this site. Palm Puree (talk) 16:04, 1 October 2025 (UTC) Reply
There is no standard or strongly agreed definition or distinction of what a roguelite is and how it differs from a roguelike. Just as the Berlin interpretation doesn't define what a roguelike is, only what chatacterists a game has to make it similar to other earlier roguelikes. Because of the lack of any hard definition, we simply avoid using roguelite as a genre. If there is ever agreement in a wide range of sources we can consider that. Reference 18, The Berlin Interpretation, is used about a dozen times in the article. However, the link does not work. 178.235.184.97 (talk) 17:55, 1 March 2024 (UTC) Reply

I marked the URL in the ref as dead, now the title links to an archived version.--LaukkuTheGreit (TalkContribs) 18:15, 1 March 2024 (UTC) Reply

Living card game?

[edit ]
Latest comment: 10 months ago 2 comments2 people in discussion

I do not agree with:

"These games are inspired by physical living card games, where the player builds their deck over the course of the game"

Card games that require building a deck over the course of the game are "deck-building games", for example Dominion.

In "living card games" such as Arkham Horror Living Card Game, decks are built *before* and *between* games, not during the game. In this respect they are similar to collectible card games such as Magic.

I edited the article but it was reverted, so I'd like to propose either reinstating the edit or correctly describing LCGs. Fastspinecho (talk) 03:55, 5 September 2025 (UTC) Reply

We can't use our opinions but have to go buy what sources say. But that said, I could have sworn the verge article linked StS to living deck games, but now that I have a chance to look at it further, that's not in there at all, leaving it to standard deck-building games, so I've undo my revert.
